Professor Xiaoqi Feng is Professor of Urban Health and Environment at the UNSW School of Population Health and Honorary Professorial Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, Australia. She has authored over 200 publications with a career Field-Weighted Citation Impact above 9, led major research projects with over $21 million in funding (including NHMRC and Heart Foundation fellowships), and successfully translated research into policy and practice.
Professor Feng leads research to improve urban health and reduce health inequalities, focusing on place-based interventions. Her work uses longitudinal big data studies and randomised trials, such as those on urban greening and social or nature prescribing-mainly through the PowerLab which she co-founded and co-directs and the Rapid Urbanisation and Population Health (RUPH) research group at UNSW.
Her research has had global scholarly and policy impact, such as 100s of millions invested in greening strategies for health reasons. She co-created the influential 'Domains of Pathways' model linking green space and health, and introduced the internationally recognized concept of "Lonelygenic Environments" in The Lancet Planetary Health. Her studies have informed major policy decisions, including Sydney’s planting of one million trees by 2022.
Professor Feng’s work has been widely recognised in academic, policy, and media circles, featured in outlets such as ABC, SBS, The Guardian, and The Conversation (with over 100,000 views across five articles), and honored with national awards from research and industry bodies. She has mentored 10 early-career researchers, supervised 11 PhD completions, chairs the UNSW Faculty of Medicine and Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committee (MHEDIC), and has held leadership roles in national and international academic committees.
