
My Expertise
Gonz is a Lecturer in Industrial Design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he teaches across core design studios and leads applied research in socially responsive design, public infrastructure, and sustainable materials innovation. With a cross-disciplinary practice that bridges design, data, and civic engagement, Gonzalo’s work explores how design can create meaningful impact in public space and urban policy.
He is the Chief Investigator of Benchmark for NSW, a groundbreaking project in collaboration with Transport for NSW and MIT’s Civic Data Design Lab, which uses smart street furniture to gather data and improve perceptions of safety in public environments. Gonzalo has also led research in the medical device sector, including the Lead Designer and Director to the design and development of the ORPEUS organ transport system, funded through a national CRC-P grant, Director of EVOX Medical and Biolab100.
A passionate educator and mentor, Gonzalo has received multiple teaching awards and has guided numerous student projects that have gained national design recognition. His professional experience spans both academia and industry, including product design, advanced manufacturing, and design-led community engagement. Gonzalo’s current research focuses on sustainable materials, circular design, and the role of design in shaping equitable urban futures.
